Zyprexa

Zyprexa is the best-selling drug for schizophrenia in the world. It provided more than $4 billion dollars in sales in 2006 alone for its maker, the pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly. An antipsychotic medication that is available by prescription only, Zyprexa was marketed as being different from older antipsychotic drugs in that it would cause less of the severe side effects. Though partially true, Zyprexa actually causes a number of its own serious side effects.

Serious Side Effects of Zyprexa

Zyprexa has been shown to pose a significant risk of:

  • Diabetes, a chronic disease in which the body cannot properly produce or use insulin
  • Significant weight gain
  • Hyperglycemia, or abnormally high blood sugar levels
  • Ketoacidosis, a potentially fatal complication of diabetes that occurs when blood sugar levels rise
  • Pancreatitis, i.e., inflammation of the pancreas, signaled by abdominal pain, constipation, nausea, and jaundice
  • Stroke
  • Low blood pressure
  • Seizures
  • Liver problems

Off-Label Zyprexa Uses

Zyprexa was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1996 for schizophrenia and acute bipolar disorder in adults, but it is also used to treat some mental disorders in children and some forms of dementia in elderly patients, although it is not FDA-approved for those uses.

FDA Clamps Down on Lilly

The studies that revealed the serious side effects of Zyprexa prompted the FDA to require Eli Lilly to change Zyprexa’s drug labeling and to warn physicians and patients of these side effects of Zyprexa, in both September 2003 and March 2004.

A Billion Dollars in Settlements

Lilly has already paid more than $1.2 billion in settlements for 29,000 claims and class actions contending that patients and physicians were not adequately warned by Lilly about the dangers of Zyprexa. In addition, eight states have sued Lilly on behalf of their Medicaid programs, claiming that Lilly both concealed the risks of Zyprexa use and marketed Zyprexa for unapproved uses.
