The FDA explains that tissue or fluid from one patient can remain in a duodenoscope if it is not thoroughly cleaned and disinfected. That includes finding out which scope was used, how it was handled, and whether the device played a role.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014 Tammy Banno, Managing Partner \u2502Freese &amp; Goss<\/span>\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What Procedures Could Result in Infections and Legal Claims?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Olympus scopes are used in procedures involving the digestive system, lungs, urinary tract, reproductive system, sinuses, abdomen, and other areas of the body.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Freese &amp; Goss is reviewing potential claims involving:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Colonoscopy:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Examines the colon and rectum and can be used to remove polyps or collect tissue.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>ERCP:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Examines and treats problems involving the bile and pancreatic ducts.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Upper endoscopy:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Examines the esophagus, stomach, and upper part of the small intestine.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Bronchoscopy:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Examines the airways and lungs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Laparoscopy:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Uses a scope inserted through a small incision to examine or operate inside the abdomen or pelvis.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Ureteroscopy:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Examines the urinary tract and can be used to treat kidney or ureter stones.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Cystoscopy:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Examines the bladder and urethra.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Hysteroscopy:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Examines the inside of the uterus.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Sinus endoscopy:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Examines or treats areas within the nasal passages and sinuses.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Duodenoscopy:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Uses a specialized scope to reach the first part of the small intestine and nearby structures.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having one of these procedures does not automatically mean an Olympus device was used or caused a later medical problem. Medical records from the procedure can help identify the equipment involved.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Don&#8217;t know which scope was used?<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Most patients don&#8217;t. There usually isn&#8217;t a reason to ask who manufactured the scope before undergoing a medical procedure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An investigation can begin with information you are more likely to have:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The procedure you underwent;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The date or approximate date;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The hospital, surgery center, or medical facility;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the infection or complication began; and<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether you required hospitalization or another procedure afterward.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medical and facility records can then be used to identify the scope.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Infections Linked to Olympus Scope Procedures<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An infection might not be apparent before a patient goes home. In one adverse-event report involving the TJF-Q190V, three patients developed infections after therapeutic procedures performed with the same scope. The patients tested positive for E. coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Candida albicans. An adverse-event report does not establish that the scope caused the infections.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For potential claims, the timing of the diagnosis can be significant. Freese &amp; Goss is reviewing bacterial infections requiring hospitalization within <\/span><b>90 days<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of a qualifying procedure and certain drug-resistant infections diagnosed within <\/span><b>180 days<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, along with additional qualifying infections and injuries.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What Are the Signs and Symptoms of an Infection After a Scope Procedure?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Symptoms vary depending on the infection and procedure. Severe or worsening symptoms after a scope procedure warrant medical attention.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Watch for:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fever or chills;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increasing or severe pain;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unusual weakness or fatigue;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nausea, vomiting, or persistent diarrhea;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shortness of breath or persistent coughing;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rapid heartbeat;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Confusion, dizziness, or fainting; or<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abdominal pain or swelling.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feeling increasingly ill in the days after a procedure is also a reason to contact a medical provider.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Sepsis requires immediate medical attention.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It is the body&#8217;s extreme response to an infection and can cause tissue damage, organ failure, and death.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Severe Infections Can Have Lasting Consequences<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treatment for a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/freeseandgoss.com\/dallas-personal-injury-lawyer\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serious infection<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can involve much more than antibiotics at home. A drug-resistant infection can also limit which antibiotics doctors are able to use.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After leaving the hospital, a patient may still be dealing with weakness, limited mobility, follow-up testing, medication, rehabilitation, or home health care. Time away from work and additional medical expenses can add to an already difficult recovery.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Family members may need to take time away from work or assume caregiving responsibilities.
